West Cork to Celebrate Africa Day in Dunmanway

The vibrant spirit of Africa Day will come alive in West Cork this May, as Dunmanway prepares to host a lively community celebration on Saturday, 16th May. The event, organised at the Dunmanway Family Resource Centre, promises a rich mix of music, culture, and community engagement.

Kicking off with a parade from 12pm to 1pm in the town square, the day will bring together people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate African heritage and cultural diversity. The main event will then run from 1pm to 5pm at the Family Resource Centre, offering a welcoming space for families, locals, and visitors alike.

A major highlight of the day will be live performances, including the energetic Burundi drummers, alongside music from Citadel and various DJs. These performances are expected to create a lively atmosphere, showcasing traditional rhythms alongside modern sounds. In addition to music, attendees can explore a cultural exhibition and take part in an interactive drum workshop, providing a hands-on experience of African artistic traditions.

Organisers are also calling on the local community to get involved. They are currently seeking business sponsors and volunteers to support the event, reflecting the strong community-driven nature of the celebration. Events like this rely heavily on local participation, and the organisers are encouraging people to contribute to making the day a success.

The event is supported by several organisations, including the International Community Dynamics and West Cork Development Partnership, highlighting its importance as a cultural and social initiative within the region.

Africa Day celebrations are held worldwide to recognise the richness and diversity of African cultures, as well as the contributions of African communities globally. Bringing this celebration to Dunmanway not only promotes cultural awareness but also strengthens community connections in West Cork.

With music, dance, and cultural activities on offer, the Dunmanway Africa Day event is set to be a colourful and inclusive celebration, welcoming everyone to experience and appreciate African culture in the heart of West Cork.
